当我们用能量概念去思索系统的力学过程时，必须把“能量守恒原理”确立为“公理”．若实验发现动能(活力）不守恒时，我们的态度是不放弃

直至1787年，托马斯·杨(Thomas Young，法国，1773—1829）在《自然哲学讲义》中，引入了“能量”概念取代“活力”，并把“功能原理”表述成今天熟知的形式．
当我们用能量概念去思索系统的力学过程时，必须把“能量守恒原理”确立为“公理”．若实验发现动能(活力）不守恒时，我们的态度是不放弃这个思想，而是去寻找我们还不清楚的其他形式的能量．把发现的新形式的能量，加上动能以后，再考察两者之和是否在此过程中保持不变．以此类推，人们正是在能量守恒信念的指导下，去发现各种各样的能量形式．
1784年，J．伯努利(J．Bernouli）引入了“势函数”这个极为重要的概念，大大简化了“相互作用”的描述．由势函数推导力，用势函数取代力，用统一的能量概念思索力学过程．
