Identity是个很复杂的问题，我写的这个可能太偏学术了点儿，老公有一学期的课就是race and identity，我受他影响对这个问题比较感兴趣。这里Identify不是身份，而是more about who do you identify with. Nan Wu， on returning to China for a visit, couldn't identify with his Chinese friends in Beijing. He identify more with an American painter, whose painting style touched him.

我也不同意Nan Wu说的要squeeze out the old country，我想哈金也不是持这个观点的，不然他不会写那么多setting在中国的小说。A Free Life是他写的第一个immigrant的小说。我看了John Updike给哈金的书评，提到assimilation，就看了一些关于immigrant assimilation的东东。
