280 Commonly-Used American Slang - 1/3

不少人对slang有偏见，我对slang的定义也不是很确定，但slang不是脏话。个人感觉就是很口语话的词，说出来比较活泼，随意，逗人，很潮，年青人用的比较多。有一些slang只是某一些人群用，但很多slang都是在日常生活中能听到的，也有不少slang已和idoms融为一体。电影电视里也随处可见。很多时候，你听清了每一个字，每一个词，把这个字词写下来，你也认识，却不知道别人到底在说什么，这多半就是slang的问题。

这也是我平时看节目和杂志时的一个难点。在网上看到这个资料，280个常用slang，觉的还不错，就整理了一下，先贴1/3，和大家分享一下。

你也许不喜欢用，但知道也无妨；也许你用了都不知道，“big mouth”，“couch potato”也都在这儿划成了slang :-)

ace: He's an ace reporter.
action: Do you know where the action isinthis town?
airhead: My sister's boyfriend is a real airhead.
all wet: Your ideas about politics are all wet.
all-nighter: I almost fell asleep during the test after anall-nighter.
ammo: The gun was useless after the killer ran out of ammo.
antifreeze: I really need some antifreezein meon cold days like this.
armpit: This town is really an armpit.
awesome: What an awesome sunset.
bad: Wow, that was really a badmovie.
barf: He barfed all over the seat oftheairplane.
bashed: The boat was bashed beyondrecognition.
beat: After working all day I am really beat.
beemer: He just bought a new beemer todriveto work in.
bench: He was benched during thebasketballplayoffs.

bent: It's OK. Don't get so bent.
bent out of shape: Don't get so bent out of shape.
big gun: The president brought two big gunstothe meeting.
big mouth: Shut up! You really have a big mouth.
big stink: The citizens made a big stinkaboutthe new nuclear power station.
blade: He carried a ten inch bladewith him.
blimp: I always seem to have a blimpsittingnext to me when I travel.
blow: I'm going to blow out of herenow.
blow: He blew all his money gambling.
blow a fuse: Hey, don't blow a fuse.
blow one's cool: Calm down. Don't blow your cool.
blown away: I was blown away by hisdonation of amillion dollars.
bomb: The movie was a bomb.
bombed: The driver of the car was bombed.
bonkers: I think I am going bonkers.
boo-boo: If you make another boo-boolikethat, you won't have a job.
booze: I promised to bring two bottles of boozeto the party.
bread: I need some bread to pay for mycar.
break: A lucky break helped him getthe job.
break it up: Break it up, or I will call thepolice.
bring-down: The news of the airplane crash was abring-down.
buck: Do you have a buck I can borrow?
bummed: I was really bummed after Iheard thenews.
bummer: My trip to New York was a bummer.
bust: The whole idea was a bust.
buy it: If you don't slow down, you're going to buyitin a car accident.
call: The weatherman made a good callaboutwhen the storm would come.
can: Do you know where the can is?
carb: My motorcycle's carb is out ofadjustment.
catch some rays: I'm going to lie on the beach and catchsomerays.
catch some Z's: I need to catch some Z's beforeI goon my trip.
cheesy: That is really a cheesy lookingoutfit.
chicken: Don't be a chicken.
chintzy: That really was a chintzypresent yougot him.
chow down: I need to find a place to chow down.
clip: Watch out or they will clip youatthat bar.
clunker: I can't go on a date in that clunker.
cold fish: My date for the dance was a cold fish.
collar: I knew they would collar therobbersooner or later.
come up for air: He has to come up for air or hewilldie from exhaustion.
con: Don't try to con me.
cool: This is a really cool place towork.
cool down: Things should cool down in aday ortwo.
cop: How did you get the road sign? I coppedit.

cop: The cop showed me his badge.
couch potato: He is a couch potato.
crack open a bottle: Let's crack open a bottle forhi*****irthday.
cram: I need more time to cram forthe test.
cream: Our team creamed them badly.
croak: I feel like I am going to croak.
cruise: The skier was cruising down thehill
cuffs: He put the cuffs on the killer.
cushy: He has a really cushy job.
cut: Could you cut my whiskey with alittle water?
cut out: It is late. I have to cut out.
damage: Lets get the bill and find out the damage.
dead: This disco is really deadtonight.
deck: He was decked in the fight.
deep pockets: Her boyfriend has deep pockets.
dicey: Since the weather is a little dicey,I won't go today.
dirty: I hear that it's a dirty movie.
ditch: I'll ditch my younger brotherwith my grandmother.
do a snow job on: Don't try to do a snow job onme.
dope: He is such a dope.
dope: There are a lot of dope dealersaround here.
dork: He is such a dork.
dough: I need some dough before I cango Christmas shopping.
down: Let's go to a bar and down afew beers.
drag: Doing homework on the weekend is a drag.
dynamite: This drink is really dynamite.
earful: My grandmother gave me an earfulabout the neighborhood.
easy mark: The Japanese are an easy markbecause they usually carry cash.
eat: The problem is really eating away atme.
excellent: That's excellent man.
face-off: The two sides were headed for a nasty face-off.
