You should not think that you are paying his mortgage

you should just think that you are paying some rent or sharing utilities. Whether he uses that money to pay mortgage is his decision. Especially if you are not so sure, keeping financially independent would be the smart thing to do. Or do a formal contract to make sure that both of you are satisfied with the financial aspects of things.
