
zur Hausen of Germany was awarded the Nobel prize for medicine for his contribution to reveal the role of HPV in cervical carcinoma, which laid the foundation for the creation of the highly successful HPV vaccine. Let us not forget the contribution of Jian Zhou, M.D, Ph.D. to the cause of conquering HPV-related cancer. Jian was the first in the world to demonstrate the feasibility to make a workable HPV vaccine, which has evolved into the vaccine today in use. Jian passed away at the age of 42, in 1999, of undisclosed causes. The white flower presented here is an electron microscopy image of the empty shell of human papillomavirus, which Dr.Zhou was able to produce in the test tube, as vaccine to prevent HPV infection and cervical carcinoma.
