I agree with you that if the company did have the policy that employees are not allowed to share their salary information, they have the right to fire people over it. But, I feel that the policy itself is there to benefit the company at the expense of its workers (or ,I guess, workers who do not have very good negotiation skills or are just not aggressive enough or was misinformed).
And with salaries depending on the job market and the new hire's negotiation skills, I agree that companies can do this if they want, I just don't think it's an ethical practice, hehe. Just my personal opinion :)
