“with a slam and flick”

当抡锤打铁时， 一锤下去后， 锤会弹一下。 一锤砸下是slam， 反弹幅度很小， 是flick。 抡锤的人会利用这个时间喘息一下， 看好如何下另一锤。 从声音的角度是重音然后是轻音， 或长音然后是短音。

其实， 多数情况下， 是师徒合作。 师傅一手用钳子夹住铁活， 一手拿一个小锤儿， 他在活上敲哪儿， 徒弟用大锤砸哪， 师傅的小锤是命令， 位置与轻重都唯小锤是命。 总体的效果是一轻一重， 声音一大一小。

Seamus Heaney mentioned in his first line "All I know is a door into the dark.", which could indicated that he may not know how exactly the works in forger going. But the unique sound he mast know and the action behind the sound he may also knew or he could imagine.
