You have to allow him to be himself.  He has a natural reaction to your natural reaction.  He now explained where he's from very well and expressed his intention to go forward with you.  This is a good experience for couples.  I think it's lucky for both of you that you can be very honest with each other from this point forward. Not sure why you think this is a bad thing and feel bad about it.
