but 'tell me more about yourself', is very vague request that I don't really like either. It's very hard for anyone to respond. If you are asked, where do you start? I would never ask anyone to do so.

If you want to know him more from email, you should chitchat more about the daily life or something you are inrterested in knowing. It's better even if you ask some really solid questions, like: what he likes to do on weekends or on vacation, etc.
