Thanks for the details. Americans are brain-washed into thinking that (1) we pay less tax than other contries; (2) social welfare is our biggest expense. 

I compared my income and take home income with my Geman friends once. Their tax rate was no higher than mine, but the social benefit was a lot better in Germany than US. I would rather my tax $ go feeding the poor ane educating the disvantaged kids, then going to war and defence. 

Here is the top 3 US budget items in 2012: 

Defense 24%, 

Healthcare 22%, 

Pension (22%).

Educaiton is 4% :-(
