一般的老年人是没有资格享受公费的老人院的， 只有在没有房产， 财产在＄３０００元以下， 才有资格申请的。 对于不能自理的老人，私立老人院每个月的收费是八千到一万美元， 这还要是老人在能自理的条件下就入住的。就是说， 入住的时候就一次过交了一大笔费用， 除了不用自己剪草， 日常生活自理，  每个月还要交几千的月租。很多美国老人到最后就是变卖房产， 用尽一切积蓄来渡过生命的最后几年的。 这个老先生在最后的时光， 能在家里得到太太的照顾， 还得到太太不尽的感恩。

看了这个故事， 我有点不解。 为什么老先生在知道自己患癌症前，并没有向华女求婚呢？ 他没有结过婚，他也应该知道在他去世后 太太是可以享受他一半以上的退休金的， 如果她本人没有退休金的话。 那是国家给的福利。
