If he loved her,

 

he'd have made sure that she'd be financially taken care of after he is gone.

She was not taking responsibility for herself.  Feeling fallen in love does not obviate one's responsibility for her own financial well being.

Someone once asked: what love has to do with it?

(The bliss she was after is in essence the condition under which she can be "care-free*".  In reality, such thing does not exist, or carries a hefty price.)

*mentally, even though she was busy physically taking care of him.  For some, the mental burden is unbearable, they'd rather labor phyiscally than mentally burdened.
