I have told the hospital that I need a payment plan since I can not pay off the medical bills in a short period of time.  So the hospital sent me a hospital payment plan plus a charge reduction application form.  I have submitted my W2, paystub, bank statements, my kids' college tuition payment receipts which show that I will have difficulty of paying the bills with my income and expenses.  I got 40% reduction one year and I got none this year.  It never hurts to ask.
