There is no good way of telling someone about what you said..

First off, planning to change someone you are dating isn't smart to begin with and may not work from a way run.

And if you still want to do it, try starting on a positive note, such as "I"m really happy that you are so focused on our relationship and you really care about how we are doing and pay attention to things big and samll between us", then gently introduce the idea that you just don't want to see him getting too frustrated or even hurt when there is diffrence between you two, particularly on issues that are not critical to your relationship. Bottomline, you want him to feel that you would like him to be happier in the relationship.
