I don't know what happened, but here is what I think.

Business and money is only a small part of life. Unfortunately, a lot of chinese take it too seriously, to the extent to value a person.

There is always a lot of questions regarding how to make money. A lot of people think as long as it is legal, it is good. But maybe others care about whether it is ethical or not.

I'd say not all the rich businessmen are smart. Some takes more risks and just being lucky, some are doing borderline almost-illegal stuff, some charges more than "fair market" value of the service.

All in all, I don't think you have bad intention, probably just had some bad assumption what people can take.
