What's wrong with calling them mom and dad?

Even my monther in law in her hu*****and "dad", similar to chinese "ha ta die/ba". I didn't have any problem to call them mom and dad, because it sounds natural to me and to them. It is awkward to call them by name, not chinese tradition and not really old fashioned american tradtion either.
