You are right, but you can just walk away from the unfriendly

group, and talk to someone else. I assume there should be some nice and friendly people there. It would be nice if you can initiate a conversation with someone. You can give some complements to the ladies clothes, talk about the weather, or introduce yourself. Remember one thing, they are not any better than you, even they might speak better English, having whiter skin... but you had come a long way from another side of the earth, and went to the school in U.S., got better grade than them, maybe even make more money than them. Just be confident, friendly, and having good manner, then you will always be able to make new friends
