翻开一本十几年前先生寄给我的诗集（one hundred and one famous poems)，一首名为《美国于我》～《America for me》的诗吸引了我。当我把它翻译出来的时候，我的心也跟着字里行间的情感跳跃，正值美国国庆，祝福大家在新的国度获得归属感。

这首诗的作者亨利·范戴克先生毕业于普林斯顿神学院，并在普林斯顿大学任教授20余年，他1913年受美国总统任命赴荷兰和卢森堡任外交公使，此诗是他任满归国而作。我也有幸将自己在欧洲一些照片找来，和诗句相配，包括瑞士，摩纳哥，比利时布鲁塞尔，罗马古城，加州集会作品，伦敦，巴黎，罗马竞技场，美国加州海岸，日落，德国黑森林，巴黎喷泉（我没有去过凡尔赛宫，姑且充数诗句里的喷泉），太浩湖及雪景，瑞士阿尔卑斯山，英国牛津，海边弄潮儿，斯坦福，苹果山，加州海岸及小镇，海边日落。。。
最早接触这首诗是出门的那一周，在海滨餐馆吃饭时与家人一起探讨诗意，先生说“反正是诗句，每个人理解不同”。也许这就是诗的朦胧之美。。。一家人各抒己见有点儿文化沙龙的感觉。我把它译出来每天改一改，想到几个押韵的句子，雪儿建议我不如全诗压一个ian,an,uan的韵，算是她给我的小小挑战，就把词句在脑子里换来蹦去。也想到一些歌词，比如《一剪梅》中的“真情象草原广阔，层层风雨不能阻隔”用于“彼岸丰饶蒙福之地滔滔汪洋不能隔拦”。而“今日亦然直至永远”则想到“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end .” 的译文。我想范戴克写下“What she is and what she is to be ”的时候，可能也受到“Glory Be” 的启发。
