A very interesting and good question, I don't have good answers for that although I've been paying attention to the patterns of stress/intonation for some time, based on my learning experience, here's my two cents:

It depends (non sense?), and the general rule is still observed: if the starting word of a sentence is a content word (noun, verb, adjective or adverb), this word is usually stressed; while if the starting word is a function word (prep, pron, aux. verbs or article), it is usually not stressed. However, there is exceptions depending on the actual scene (context) and the speaker's message intending to express, for example, the sentence"My mom is just glad that ...", in which the word "My" is stressed in that reading to indicate it is HIS "mom" not others' parents. However, if he stressed the "mom", the meaning expressed would be different, ie, it is his "MOM", not his "dad" is glad that ...

This is my own opinion and may not be right, and I do believe that we would have more differnt viewpoits and study experiences on this which would provide us more deep glimpse into that.

By the way I do believe learners are on the right track by following Native speakers' readings, and we are in the process of building up our ability to grasp the right correct pronunciation techniques ... who knows what our readings would be after five years (through this intensive reading practice)?
