Your translation is closer in meaning than mine. how about:

为生而生是荒唐

What I understand is: Things growing without a purpose defeats growth. Things grow to yield fruits.A fruitless growth is wasteful and abusive. Thus I like the word 荒唐,which is used for rythmic reasons. In your translation, 毁probably means stifling growth.
