Afterwards, the pressure from mortgage, college tuition, etc, gradually changes the spending habits.觉得有点歧义，the spending habits是不是换成his spending habits更清楚些.
advancing better->advancing faster, or climbing the corporate ladder faster
get things done well带着well觉得怪
Nice is an extra but not essential;-->"Being nice" is something extra, maybe?
