except the end of WW2 &1997 handover, right now could be a good time point for HK people to fight for more independence and freedom before the 50 yrs limit, under the current international political environment.
As long as Xi's gov. still wants to trade with the west world (i don't think they'll give up, CCP gained more than they never could've dreamed), when it faces US & the west world waking up and fighting back to it's aggressions at all fronts, Xi's less likely to take extreme hardline approaches toward HK including military engagement.
One thing Xi's gov. can do and can be effective is a long term project of population replacement from China to dilute HK local population. Russia has done that in the eastern Ukraine regions, which showed the effect in Crimea Annex.
