For vacation, long distance driving is a part of fun, you can easily take on a side trip and stop at any place you want. I've driven long distances for vacations in N. and S. America, and Europe.

On the other hand, long distance overnight train ride in Europe was really fun too.  Once my family took a night train from Belgrade, Serbia to Saltzburg, via Bosnia, Slovenia. We booked a booth for ourselves and had a really enjoyable trip.
