People across the United States volunteered for community projects Saturday in an activity called the National Day of Service, tied to a holiday Monday honoring the memory of America's best known civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr.
In Washington, President Barack Obama appeared at an event, one of many moved to Saturday because his second inauguration before thousands of people will take place on the King holiday.
VOA’s Mike O’Sullivan reports from Los Angeles on some of the local projects around the country.

Obama took the official oath for a second term Sunday with his hand placed upon a Bible belonging to first lady Michelle Obama's family.
Earlier in the day, the president had joined Vice President Joe Biden, who had already taken his oath, for a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
The U.S. Constitution mandates the president be sworn in on January 20. Since that date falls on a Sunday this year, the president and his vice president will retake their oaths on Monday in the traditional public ceremony in front of the Capitol building overlooking the National Mall.
Monday's ceremony is not expected to be as large as the president's first Inauguration when nearly two million people descended on the Mall to witness the swearing in of the first African American president. This year, about 800,000 are expected to attend the president's second and final inauguration.
On Monday, the president will take the oath using two historic Bibles - one owned by 19th-century president Abraham Lincoln, and the other by civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated in 1968.
Monday's inauguration coincides with the federal holiday marking King's birthday.
After President Obama's address Monday, he and his wife will ride in the Inaugural parade, returning to the White House in a motorcade. They likely will get out of the car and walk part of the way, as they did four years ago.
Later, the Obamas will attend two official Inaugural balls, in contrast to the 10 balls that were held in 2009.
