这是个很流行的表达法，昨晚在电影Independent Day里再次听到。今早来公司，还问了问对面的美国同事，测试一下到底有多popular。看来是很常用的。
这个表达, 有人说，是源于德国十九世纪Richard Wagner's音乐歌剧Ring Cycle里的一个熟悉角色，名叫Brunnhilde，常常由胖胖女子扮演，在最后十几分钟或近二十分钟里压轴独唱(歌剧很长，长达14多个小时)。所以， 'When the fat lady sings' is a reasonable answer to the question 'when will it be over?'
但也有人说，不是这个典故，因为，印刷的文字记载表明是从1970s开始出现的, 源于一个叫Dan Cook的体育解说员， 在德州体育比赛时说的一句话“ The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings", 而广为流传的。
