前不見古人

The Two Beggars

前不見古人,---Qian2 bu4 jian4 gu3 ren2,
後不見來人.---Hou4 bu4 jian4 lai2 ren2.

念天地之悠悠,---Nian4 tian di4 zhi you you,
獨愴然而淚下.---Du2 chuang4 ran2 er2 lei4 xia4

I saw not those who came before me.
Nor shall I know those of future generations;
Disconsolate tears well up from my lonely heart
In contemplation of this eternal and infinite universe.

Chen Ziang (陳子昂)
He was an official during the reign of Emperss Wu Zetian
(武則天 685AD to 705AD).

The English translation is from the book "Mao Tse-Tung and I were Beggars",
written by Dr. Xiao Yu (蕭瑜博士), the schoolmate of Mao Zedong. Mao and
Xiao were schoolmates in the First Normal School of Hunan at the city of
Changsha (湖南長沙第一師範學校).
