a few months ago when i was in china, i saw a woman reading an english book in a park. of course i did not bother her or anything. i was just strolling. by the time i passed her again, i noticed she was reading 一本汉译英的书。she was reading loud. from her reading i was speculating that the book was a collection of translations of 中国散文 such as 荷塘月色。i was somewhat aghast. i would not be willing to spend my time reading a translation if i could lay my hand on a book by an english author before i master the language. i believe that translations (from chinese to english) tend to be simple in sentence structure for translators still follow thinking or structure in chinese language. but english authors, i meant english speaking authors, take advantage of the language (english) fully in terms of words, structures, rhetoric etc.
i remember something
