朋友的故事

losing a job in an economic crisis with nationwide layoffs is a misery. Make that losing the job at 50 of age, the torment doubles. the situation is never worse as the jobless man wants to go off to college to get the costly degree w/o some solid financial aid . such an experience befell my friend right after he celebrated his 50th birthday then lost his job.

not listening to his wife, he enrolled 3 courses for his stats program. his passion to obtain a statistics degree is so strong that he must be all by himself to find out how to get there because his wife didn't want to give him any financial supports .

he found that he qualified for some grant and loan, but these 2 could be only enough to cover his tuition and books. how about the mortgage for his townhouse? how about the bread and milk? how about the gifts to his wife? finally he got a FT job, washing dishes at a vicinal cafeteria.

his schedule was tight. he studied very hard even when working. he made flash cards putting them on the large metal dishwasher. After he loaded the racks, he flipped cards, learning the new concepts of stats, --learning how to get out STD, MEAN.... the water and steam broke down all around him. making his fingers wrinkled. many times his tired brain drifted off, and the dishes crash to the floor. his grades went down and down, never up :). It was the hardest work he had ever done, but was the one he could do to pay his food and room. their marriage was at stake since his wife could not bear such a trial for her stubborn hubby hadn't a decent job for almost 1 and half years and still pursued his costly degree. the old man was reaching onto the very verge of despair...

only angels could help him. Just when he thought he was going to drop out of his college career, an angel appeared?
