The commonly known English names for alcoholic beverages are explained as follows, which are classified as the undistilled and distilled. This is compiled originally as an answer to the question posted by wxcfgh85 (请教大家，wine 跟 spirit 的含义是否完全一样? 都包括了伏特加，白兰地，威士忌，gin和rum吗？谢谢。).

1. Undistilled beverages

* Beer: An alcoholic beverage made by brewing and fermenting cereals, usually malted barley, and flavored with hops and the like for a slightly bitter taste.

* Wine: An alcoholic beverage typically made of fermented grape juice.

2. Distilled alcoholic beverage (also called liquor or spirit)

The liquor and spirit are a distilled beverage, such as brandy or whiskey, which is produced by distilling fermented grain, fruit, or vegetables. This excludes undistilled fermented beverages such as beer and wine.

* Vodka: An unaged, colorless, distilled spirit, originally made in Russia.

* Brandy: A spirit distilled from wine or fermented juice of grapes or apples, peaches, plums, etc. Cognac is the brandy distilled in the town of Cognac, in W. central France.

* Whiskey: A liquor distilled from a fermented mash of grain, such as barley, rye, or corn, and usually containing from 43-50% alcohol.
