The line, "Love is not love / Which alters when it alteration finds," is from one of Shakespeare's most famous sonnets, sonnet no. 116. A sonnet is an English poetry form that consists of 14 lines of 10 syllables in each line.

This first stanza announces the central idea of the poem: love does not change, even when it finds changes (alterations) in the object of love. Shakespeare begins by saying that he will accept no exceptions to true love. If a person claims to love another, and then later decides that they do not love the other, then for Shakespeare in this sonnet, such a claim of love is not true love. It often happens that other persons (who can be the object of our love) change in the course of time, or that we learn things about them that we did not know. If this leads us to no longer love the other person, then this poem claims that it never was love that we felt. Later in the poem Shakespeare writes, "Love's not Time's fool" (love is not time's fool - the first apostrophe is a contraction while the second is possessive), which emphasizes that changes over time do not affect true love. Shakespeare also repeats the theme of "alter" and "alteration" when he writes, "Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks." In this line, "his hours..." means "time's hours and weeks" (that is to say, time is personified here). In other words, love (that is, true love) does not change over time.

In this poem, Shakespeare is saying that true love is unconditional love.
