When you chase a wild goose, can you catch it? Probably not.
"Chase a wild goose" or "on a wild goose chase" means to make a futile effort.

On the trot – one after the other.
He studied 3 days on the trot.
In AE, we like to use “in a row”. He studied 5 days in a row.

To quit the snake ladder - I have no idea :)
