根据上下文,我个人对于"we're not holding our breath"的理解为: "就是说不要做过高的期望." 只是我的浅见,和大家商榷.

下面是我从网上查询到的 "not hold one's breath"短语的用法和相关解释,和大家分享.

"not hold one's breath"

It often is put as an imperative, don't hold your breath, meaning "don't expect it, it's not likely," as in They may get married this summer, but don't hold your breath.
