You are sort of naive in this competitive world!

It is not necessary to negotiate with your good friends and closed relatives. Easy going wins friends.

But, you have to learn the negotiate skills in the business environment since the nature of business/management is to promote competitiveness.
Most of bosses are less likely to volunteer for your interest.

I used to post audio books called "you can negotiate everything" or "getting to Yes", which are helpful to professionals. Unfortunately, I deleted them all due to some potential complications.

I recommend you read these kind of books.
Hard work is good, but not enough!
You need learn to sell yourself, and let others know you and your contributions to the business!
You need learn to leverage all possible sources....

Remember that visibility is one of keys to success.
