I used the text and the original audio for, and only for, the purpose of accent correction. So I didn't try to memorize the text like many other people have been doing. (It seemed to work not bad for me in accent reduction though.)

During the process of reading NCE II, I had a feeling that the text was edited more for improving written English than for speaking. After I started reading the book, my son has reminded me more than once that I spoke like as though I was writing something.

Mostly, the texts use des.c.r.i.p.tive sentences, which are needed in daily dialogues, since one can't avoid describing something when they talk to others. It does help in speaking, but I am not sure if it is one of the most effective ways.

Another drawback is that the NCE books are written in Britain English. I started feel a little bit uncomfortable of the grammar and the background of the content almost from the very beginning. And these were the main reasons that I decided to stop reading NCE and switch to the more basic and simpler material such as English 900 instead.
