A.J. Hoge's English learning theory/method is super; To learn English as a technique instead of knowlege. His suggestions on learning spoken English is quite striking:
Understandable repetitive listening, using easy material: if you use materials which you don't understand you will learn less.
Understanding is not enough, you must use repetition. You must hear a new word or a grammer point many times (30, 50 to 100 times) beore you can understnad it instantly.
Practise narrow listening: listening to many things about the same topic, students who listen to similar things would learn faster and speak better than students who listen to different kinds of things. For example, you can choose one speaker and find many things by him. Listen to all his braodcast, speeches, audios.
Listen to movies. Don't watch all of the movie one by one as a way of learning spoken/listening practice; only watch one scene or segment per week. Maybe two to three minutes for each session. first watch the scene with subtitles of english and your language;keep down the new words/phrases; listen to the scene many times with English subtitles; listen to the scene without sub-titles; repeat steps above for one week. On the next week go to the next scene and repeat again. It will take you a long time to finish a movie, that's Ok, but you will improve your english very fast in this way.
I appreciate his way of teaching/learning very much, but cannot complement his pronunciation as an instructor.
