Interpretation
It is impossible to put a quart into a pint pot. A quart is twice the size of
a pint, so there is not enough space in a pint pot to hold a quart. If you
try to force a quart into a pint pot, it will overflow.
The proverb "a quart into a pint pot" is used to describe an attempt to put
too much into a small space. It is often used in a humorous way, but it can
also be used to express frustration or exasperation. For example, if you are
trying to cram too much stuff into a suitcase, you might say that you are
trying to "fit a quart into a pint pot."
Examples:
- "The boss is trying to fit a quart into a pint pot by asking us to do too
much work in too little time."
- "I tried to fit all my clothes into my suitcase, but it was like trying to
fit a quart into a pint pot."
- "The new software is so full of features that it's like trying to fit a
quart into a pint pot."

In many cases, less is more, I learned late in life. At work, after putting in a
few hours on a task, I'd stop satisfied with whatever progress I had made and
call it a day. No deadline could make me burn the night oil trying to fit a
quart into a pint pot. I'd hit the sack before 10pm. The next morning, if I had
a good night's sleep, new ideas and fresh angles would spring up out of nowhere,
often surprising myself, and lead to simple elegant solutions.
I was not alone. Years later, I read in James Clavale's "Shogun":
That night Toranaga could not sleep. This was rare for him because normally
he could defer the most pressing problem until the next day, knowing that if
he was alive the next day he would solve it to the best of his ability. He
had long since discovered that peaceful sleep could provide the answer to
most puzzles, and if not, what did really matter?
