APAD: The pen is mightier than the sword

"The pen is mightier than the sword" means that written words, ideas, and communication are more effective tools for creating long-term social, political, or personal change than violence, force, or war.  It suggests that influencing minds is more powerful than controlling bodies.

In modern times, it often applied to journalism, social media, and persuasive writing as tools to fight injustice, influence policy, and mobilize communities.

Origin:
Coined by English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton in his 1839 play Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy.

True,—This!
Beneath the rule of men entirely great
The pen is mightier than the sword. Behold
The arch-enchanters wand!— itself a nothing!—
But taking sorcery from the master-hand
To paralyse the Cæsars—and to strike
The loud earth breathless!—Take away the sword—
States can be saved without it!

I think all of us know the power of propaganda aka brian washing, which is a good example of "The pen is mightier than the sword".

On the other hand, there are plenty of examples in history of writers who were jailed and/or persecuted because of their mighty pens.

In addition to detective and mystery books, I like to read well written biographies and autobiographies. As the true stories are even mightier and moving to me.

One example: the stories in《巨流河》written by 齐邦媛 made me weep like a willow (see the screenshot of my comment under one wxc blog post about 齐's passing).

Wish All a good Thursday.
