It rained cats and dogs and wouldn't let up on the fifth day of my recent trip
to my hometown. The wind gusted, the sky scowled, the land flooded, and the
temperatures fell. After visiting the county museum, which hoarded copies of
fascinating volumes on regional subjects in a reading room but was not lending
or selling any, as if trying its best to keep the knowledge local, I checked in
at a drab leaky hotel opposite the People's Government complex, the only one in
that part of the town that accepted passports.
It would've bored my pants off had I not packed in my only luggage, a sports
duffle bag, Tom Wolfe's bestseller "The Bonfire of The Vanities." The stories,
half a dozen cigarettes, and the downpour outside, made the second half of the
day a perfect treat.
