这个idiom的起源可以追溯到古罗马时期，据说与古罗马作家普林尼（Pliny the Elder）在其《自然史》（Naturalis Historia，公元77-79年）中的一段记载有关。 普林尼提到，庞培（Pompey）的敌人米特里达梯六世（Mithridates VI）為了怕被下毒暗殺，曾试图通过每天服用少量毒药来增加自己對毒的抗性。
