It was warm and sunny on our 2nd day in Hamburg, and we joined a city walking tour titled “An alt. side of Hamburg”. There were quite a few interesting sites during two and half hour tour, but one particular site made me (and few others in the group) laugh out loud.
It was 3 sets of staircase made of concrete, with colours painted on them. The tour guide explained:
there are two football teams in city of Hamburg: Hamburger SV (HSV) and FC St. Pauli.
The team colours of HSV are blue, white, black; the ones of St Pauli are red, white, brown.
Every few days at midnight, the fans of HSV paint the stairs with the team colours, then a few hours later, the fans of the St Pauli paint over the stairs again with their colours. Since the staircase located just inside the St Pauli neighborhood, the staircase is normally end with their colours, like what we saw in the tour (see pic below).
A perfect example of ongoing tug of war, isn’t it?
