An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind
The passage in Leviticus states, "And a man who injures his countryman – as he has done, so it shall be done to him [namely,] fracture under/for fracture, eye under/for eye, tooth under/for tooth. Just as another person has received injury from him, so it will be given to him." (Lev. 24:19–21).
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” This quote by Mahatma Gandhi is a reference to the famous passage from Leviticus in the Bible (from the part known as the “Old Testament” by Christians – an often strange and fanciful document). Gandhi’s point being that simplistic retribution is not the solution to the world’s ills. The consequences of the “eye for an eye” philosophy result in an endless cycle of violence.
