At the end of Dec.2023, wreaths of flowers from former Chinese Premiers Zhu Rongji 朱镕基 and Wen Jiabao 温家宝 and a number of political figures appeared at the funeral of the jurist Jiang Ping 法学家江平, which was a surprise to his student He Weifang 贺卫方.
In this episode, Chai Jing interviews He Weifang about his life intersection with Jiang Ping in 1989; their joint solidarity with the suspended Freezing Point Weekly 冰点周刊in 2006, when they wrote a letter to Hu Jintao胡锦涛; and Jiang and He's joint efforts to abolish the re-education-through-labor system (废止劳教制度) in 2007, suggesting that an unconstitutional review should be initiated.
Jiang has since openly criticized resistance from Zhou Yongkang 周永康, the secretary of the Political and Legal Committee, and in 2011, when He Weifang called out Wang Lijun 王立军 and criticized the campaign against gangs (运动式打黑), Jiang supported him in his old age, which led to the end of the Chongqing incident.
In the midst of major public events, Jiang Ping has repeatedly reiterated that the rule of law's constraints on public power are also a safeguard for those in power themselves, and that "without an independent judiciary, no one is safe." (“没有独立的司法,没有一个人是安全的。”)Jiang Ping's life was an illustration of the evolving relationship between the rule of law and power in China, which remained a subtle expression up to his funeral.
