WWII, tried to push the envelope of the fighter plane P-38 by Lockheed Martin.

Lindbergh found a way to fly the aircraft in a  fuel saving mode during cruise which was forbidden by the manufacturer risking of burning the engine.

But Lindbergh succeeded in doubling the range of the aircraft without burning the engine.

Part of the history was changed by this improvement. It was the P-38s carried the mission to intercept and shoot down Admiral Yamamoto from their land base. While the Japanses thought Yamamoto's trip was way out of any American fighter's reach.
