Judge everything by the results.

The problem is scale. Results are often short-term and short-sighted.
One example is the stock market. Buffett or Lynch wouldn't sell his holdings for
loss over one or two quarters.
You see this also in hard-working office workers ignoring their health and striving
to make more. Year after year, one good result comes after another and so do the
expectations until things, things out of their control, turn ugly.
