The Yellow River as if it flows out of the white clouds,
Surrounded by the mountains, the lone Yumen Pass stands out.
Why use the Qiang flute playing the Broken Willow Song for sorrow,
The spring breezes don't reach desolate the Yumen Pass so far away.
《Out of the Great Wall》by 许渊冲
The Yellow River rises to the white clouds,
The lonely town is lost amid the mountains proud.
Why should the Mongol Flute complain no willow grow?
Beyond the Gate of Jade no vernal wind will blow.
This quatrain describes a desolate scene out of the Gate of Jade, a part of the Great Wall.
