Many years ago I came over to the States to pursue my graduate study. My first impression of this country was very good. I saw lots of trees, green grass everywhere, and even wild animals like squirrels. It was very fascinating!
However not for long, I began to feel lots of pressure from my study. At that time I was a teaching assistant (TA) in a laboratory. Although I got a decent score in my TOFEL, during my TA career, I feel what I lacked most was my English skills, particularly my listening comprehension.
One day, I asked one of my students where she came from. When she said "Maryland", I was completely lost. If she had said "马里兰” I would've understood. But her reply sounds like "麦若愣”。 We talked over and over again and finally I got what she meant. What a embarrassment for me!
There are many other stories during that time. Hope I can share more in the future!
Actually I don't have much confidence in my English writing, so please feel free correct me where you see fit!
Lastly I hope everyone have a nice day!
