CBC Windsor is taking a hard look at police in the city leading up to a public town hall on Wednesday night. We invite you to join us with your questions about what you want from the Windsor police services , the new ( ) public accountability one of the biggest prosperities, and he will be here on our panel taking your questions , ( tabling?) Wednesday at the Capital theater starting at 8 o'clock, it is free, just stop by. Now one of the ways simply services have improved the accountabilities is through to use the video cameras , usually are ( ) at the dashboard at their cars . in Edmonton they are gonna step fast, they are trying out body cameras. Superintendent Ed Keller, the Edmonton police services is on the telephone . Good morning sir! Good morning! What about the cameras? Well, body camera is a body worn video is a video camera that attached to the officer and that video will phone the officers around and them, I guess it works differently ( )cell phone from the camera does( ) in the car . this camera actually follow the office into the home or outside the car and to the back ( ) and has the abilities to the tape or receive audio and the voice and the video what's happening and what the officer can see . The particular model were are casting right now is the one just ( ) in serving the ( ) area and the officer can tape variant directions the officer is facing . So does the police officer physically use this thing? So we develop some policies for them so that they can determine when to use it , we do know want them whether in general patrol, or generally walking down the street going about their duties to be taping people around them, we are not about investigating at that point, really we have no interest in having people as part of previous police record. However, when they are dispatching to a call from the public or when they come ( ) discover and they've got now, a legal duty to investigate that point they will turn on the camera and they will allow the camera to tape the video and the voice while they are investigating that particular incidence . You surely talked about the specific scenario whether this should be useful, can you ah help me out with one of those? I would say really any scenario is ( ) police, we can have the independent accurate and objective ( ) correction of the reaction between a whatever officer and a member of the public ( ) engaging their duties , but any one of those set the time to have the abilities to go back and have a good ( ) collection effected by, you know , subject thing like a person recalling as thing that they can recall, anyone of those are interests to us , anything from the camera would actually be collecting evidence , you know, of what a person may have looked like, ( ) those type of things, all of we up to one of the questions of a contact the abilities to have something independent accurate and objective is a great interest . I am wondering if the officer inform people in a particular scene they are in fact being videotaped , they do , they hold intend of the video is not that in any way of hiding and the device itself is worn in open( ) visible and the policy will develop and we are really testing right now , we require the officer to tell the person that they are being taped. What will the footage be used for, what can the footage be used for? ( )the footages can be use for in many things could be used for evidence so there is any result in criminal charges and the footages could be used for evidence in anything from procedural matter or what the person received , they have the right to cancel those types of things , to collect the evidence, everything the officers see will hoping the camera is also taping, it can be used to access training for ( ) purposes ( ) review and be able to response the trainees, it can be used also for helping us when we face when obligation from the member of public about behaviors , we can use it for those purposes too, I know you can speak to whether is happening here in Windsor nor would I expect you to, but generally speaking how do you think to use this camera might be improving the accountabilities and the public threat , will any police agency including yours? you know we are really going to be looking to answer some of those questions should be studying, and, you know, I am not sure the technology or ever , you never( )ever can answer some of those questions , however, you know if the technology holds subject as promises and you know we can show that we can bring about increase the accountability through this device , you know , it can only help , you know, we are working hard here to resolve a lot of technical issues , now to do that, we are gonna to do the assessment to see if from the public point of view , how they are being received and if we are in fact seeing the improvement in the way we are from the public . So Superintend Ed Keller, good to be talking with you.
