Your writing reminds me of a story that happened when I just came to the U.S. I needed a cork to seal a test tube during an experiment. So I asked a male student: where is the cork? He did not say anything, but another student (an American girl) laughed hysterically. Actually they don't use cork here, and use a cotton ball instead.
