I beg to differ

I think poem-writing in "A Free Life" stands for some sort of spiritual pursuit. I guess Han Jin is trying to drive home the point that material success is not enough,that man does not live on bread only.It is a perennial theme in literature, and Han Jin just put  it in a Chinese context. Just my 2 cents.
