Many old traditions have preserved or revived in China. Among them is sachet making, part of the celebrations for the May 5 festival, more widely known as Dragon Boat Festival.
As the day approaches, old ladies in a neighborhood of the Xidu Community in Shanghai are once again picking up the tradition of making sachets. These will be given out to neighbors during the Dragon Boat festival.
The sachet is made of colorful fabrics and stuffed with perfume and fumigant to expel insects.
The ladies of the Xidu community have bought Chinese herbal medicines such as Angelica, realgar, kaempferol and chrysanthemum. These will be used to stuff the sachets.
Fan Dexia, Xidu community in Shanghai, said, "We sit together and make all kinds of sachets and then give them out to families in our neighborhood."
Much to the pleasure of local children, the sachets can be made into all kinds of shapes, such as cows, fish and dolls.
The sachets made by the Shanghai ladies have become very popular among the local residents.
Nowadays, sachets are not just for warding off mosquitoes and other insects. They add color to the festivities of the Dragon Boat festival. The old people hope that their traditions will be passed on and kept alive by the younger generation.
